The Making of She Stays Strong

The Making of She Stays Strong

I knew right away I wanted to write out my experience as I go through this journey.

As I’ve already mentioned in previous posts— I’m not particularly good at reaching out and communicating verbally. I believe I am able to write out my thoughts and emotions better on paper (or screen, whatever).

I think that’s why I always loved art class. I could express myself in different ways (and avoid human contact when I wanted to– haha! Yay social anxiety!)

In all seriousness though, I want to write out my journey in case it helps others. Whether that’s encourage them to go get a mammogram, do a self-examination, go to the doctor for something that’s been weighing on their mind lately, or simply just to have something to relate to in case they are also in this position. I’ve spoken with a handful of other women about their experience and it’s always different. Always difficult. But I know I can keep it positive (for the most part) and want to help others get by during their downright shitty moments. Even if all they get out of it is a 2-second half-smile.

I also want to connect with other people so that I myself don’t feel so alone. Having my partner Matt living in Ottawa, Ontario and me being in Abbotsford, British Columbia, my close friends out East, and long distance relatives even further, I do tend to feel lonely on a regular basis (despite being with my parents, brother, and a handful of my amazing kick-ass supportive besties out here!) I know writing can make me feel a little more in-tune with everyone!

So, why ‘She Stays Strong’?

Sometime in my early teenage years, I picked up the little nickname ‘Stephy Sunshine’— or maybe I gave it to myself for some lame social media site back in the day, I don’t know, don’t judge me! I live for the sunshine; I swear it fuels me better than coffee can. It makes me smile, energizes me, keeps me going throughout the day. I knew I always wanted a sun tattoo one day (which, as you can see, against my parents’ wishes, I got eventually). I wanted it to represent positivity. And I wanted it somewhere on my body I would see it everyday. As a reminder to be positive, to smile, to be kind, to be ‘sun-shine-y’ as often as possible. So that’s where the sun logo comes in.

The ‘Strong’ part is a spin off of ‘Steph Gets Strong’ which is my old Instagram account name I used when trying to start up a personal training business with my partner, Matt (which didn’t pan out, but that’s a story for another time). I was (and still try to be) active throughout my week and my focus is weightlifting. Weights —> Strength = Strong. I love the idea of women doing weightlifting. I love the idea of women being strong badasses. I can’t wait to beat cancer and pick back up where I left off (I’m coming for you 225lb deadlift… I was so so close…) Health is now a priority more than ever and I think a good balance of physical and mental health is absolutely necessary to live a good life.

So ‘She Stays Strong’ can be for any woman (or person) despite it being my personal blog. You can embrace it too! Whether you’re battling cancer or going through something else super tough. Just know you can always message or email me if you need someone to chat with. Let’s stay strong together!
